Those Who Wander – A Night With Christie Shinn

Had the opportunity to attend the opening of Christie Shinn’s solo art show held in Oahu, Hawaii. The show had a diverse array of art from the 9th Wave Gallery Artist that included all of her most recent paintings in addition to several drawings and illustrations from her new series that was created special for the show.

After seeing what was there it was time to break out the camera gear and start documenting the night. Shot the event in HD with the Canon T2i DSLR camera, a 14mm f2.8 L series lens, and a 28-70mm f2.8 L series lens. It ended up being a super fun and exciting evening in downtown Waikiki and the video footage proves it.

With out any further ado, 9th Wave Gallery presents a behind the scenes look into the Christie Shinn solo show “Those Who Wander” located at Greenroom Gallery in Waikiki, Hawaii.

Showing on the beautiful island of Oahu, this North Shore artist that creates Hawaiian Surf Art hangs with clients, fans, and the 9th Wave Gallery Team as she shows the world her most recent art that includes merchandise, prints, giclees, and original paintings.

9th Wave Gallery Website – Hawaiian Surf Art to Zen Surrealism

So over the past 6 months I have been working on the 9th Wave Gallery website. I do not profess to be a web designer at all, but they have the need for all of their artists work to be uploaded and have no one else to do it. Additionally, they have had some problems with past designers coming and going which left the site in shambles. So here I am to pick up the pieces.

We are using an eCommerce web provider called Big Commerce that make it more like a template website situation rather than a complete design from the ground up. Thank goodness for that!!! It was fairly simple to use at first, but then I found out that we were needing a very complex set of product options and rules because there are so many different variations of each product that we offer and the prices are all different. After a fair amount of trial and error and a bit of practice on the back end, I am happy to say that I have it all figured out and have uploaded over 150 different products with many more to come.

The site is now put together and is working quite well. We still have a ton of work to do on the back end, but the store is up and running and looks really good. We currently represent over 10 artists and have plans to add more in the near future. When you have a free moment you should check it out. There is a ton of amazing paintings, drawings, animations, and merchandise to look at… Who knows, you might find some art that you simply have to buy.

Sending Aloha to Japan – Video Production for Shannon O’Connell

A few months ago I had the opportunity to fly over to Oahu, Hawaii to produce a video for 9th Wave Gallery Artist Shannon O’Connell. I had never met her before, but it turns out that she is the sweetest thing you will ever meet.

We filmed a lifestyle piece and an interview segment to produce a documentary based video describing her plans to travel to Japan. This trip is fueled by her passion to spread Hawaiian based aloha to the Japanese people after the devastating earthquake and tsunami last year in the form of her art, painting, and love for everything that is beautiful.

I had a ton of fun working with Shannon and the project turned out to be amazing. Also had enough time to edit a 9th Wave Gallery video that was shot with a GoPro by my good friend and part owner of 9th Wave Gallery Ryan McVay.

Waterfall at the Bamboo Forest – Maui, Hawaii

Just had lunch with my family at a waterfall inside of the Bamboo Forest.  Located on the Road to Hana, this spot is just one of many that I would recommend visiting when you come to Maui.  I have always wanted to hike around and take photographs of waterfalls that captures the motion of falling water and hope that this image becomes just one of many more to come.

Duplant Wedding Photography Eugene, Oregon

My good friends Ariel and Jenna recently flew me to the mainland from Maui, Hawaii to be their wedding photographer.  It was my privilege to work at their event as it was one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever attended.  Their wedding was at Eagle Rock Lodge which is located on the McKenzie River just outside of Eugene, Oregon and is an amazing venue that really allows for the creation of some beautiful wedding photography.  I also was able to bring my crew from Eugene to help out with the wedding video production and now that the photos are done I am turning my full attention to the editing of their wedding video.  Here are some of my favorite images, but come back soon for a short video promo of their event.

Maternity Photography on Maui

Just finished up a maternity shoot at Baldwin Beach here Hawaii. The beach located on Maui has changed dramatically over the past 2 months, and now more than ever it makes a great backdrop for portrait photography at low tide. As a photographer I am always looking for something different in a background in order to make my portraits unique and memorable. This location is exactly what I look for as it provides beautiful depth and texture and also gives that Hawaiian feel that photographers on the islands are always looking for.

Maui Cruiser – Environmental Portraiture in Hawaii

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to shoot a lifestyle portrait of professional artist Ryan McVay.  As a surrealist and abstract painter he wanted to update his image with a photograph that was different than everyone else and that would attract peoples attention in his home town located in Maui, Hawaii.

As a professional photographer I understand that it takes the right location and lighting to create photography that everyone enjoys, so we looked all over the island of Maui for the perfect location.  Hawaii has so many different landscapes to choose from so this was not an easy task, but we knew what we were looking for and when we found the right spot we both knew that we had struck gold.

Using a bunch of random car parts that were sitting on the side of the road in the middle of the Haleakala desert we assembled what local residents call a Maui Cruiser.  Kind of perfect for an artist and painter that specializes in surrealism.

Take a look at the final image and let us know what you think!!!
